The Income Tax Department

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), functions under the Department of Revenue of the Ministry of Finance. CBDT is a statutory authority. It is a government agency that is responsible for monitoring the income tax collection due to the Government of India through Income Tax Department popularly known as IT Department.

It also enforces various rules relating to
• The Income-tax Act, 1961
• Expenditure Tax Act, 1987
• Various Finance Acts (Passed in the Budget Session of parliament)
• Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements
• Various aspects of international taxation
